Anybody know what happened to Bobby Fisher these days? I thought I heard something about him being extradited back to the US to face some kind of charges.

Did you know that it is wrong to play Chess?
by Rod P ini remember being at a bookstudy one tuesday night.
i had just recently been reinstated, and i was trying hard to believe the stuff the wbts was teaching, as i went back to be reunited with my family.
(this did not mean i had all the doctrinal beliefs straightened out so that i was an "automatic believer" just because of being reinstated.).

Should you keep a marriage together for the sake of the kids?
by Rod P intesting this thread.
tried three times already, but only get error message.. wow, this time it worked.
here goes.. there are a lot of people who feel very strongly that you should keep a marriage together at all costs for the sake of the kids, since they feel that children need both a mother and a father.

Qcumbr,
Thanks for the retroactive "offer", but even that wouldn't have worked. You have to understand what it means to be disfellowshipped. You are essentially "dead" in Jehovah's eyes. You are the worst kind of human being, and you deserve to be destroyed in Armageddon. The only way out of this is to repent, and come back into full standing with the "truth". Like the Catholics used to teach in medieval days "falsehood has no rights."
It is all one-sided. There can be no middle ground. It is all 100% "take" on the JW side, and you are expected to do all the "giving" and "giving in". Period. End of story. For one reason. They have the Truth and God's blessings, while you and I do not.
What would you do if your child needed a blood transfusion in a life or death situation? Give in to your wife? And if you did, and the child died, how could you live with yourself and your conscience? And if you didn't, and gave the child a blood transfusion and it saved her life, how do you think you wife would feel. You just made her son or daughter violate Jehovah's law on the sanctity of blood; you tainted our child. She would likely hate, even despise you for that.
Where and when do you stand for principle? Does that count for nothing? And I don't mean getting fanatical and preachy about it. Just ordinary everyday living, trying to make the family thing work on a fair and decent basis. It takes two to make it work. "One" cannot do it all alone.

LMS-Chef,
OK, so how exactly would you fix it, or get rid of it?
"Wife, I want you to stop being a JW." Wife's response: "No way!"
"Rod, I want you to quit being Mormon and come back to the Truth." Rod's response: "You want me to believe something I cannot honestly believe anymore? Doesn't that make me a hypocrit? Tell you what, Dear, let's both stay away from our two religions, since that is what is causing our problems." Wife's response: "You expect me to abandon Jehovah, when I know this is the Truth!"
"Well, dear, how are we going to work out a reasonable compromise here for the sake of the kids which we both love?" Wife's response: "Rod, you want to teach our kids only half the Truth, while I have to teach them the Whole Truth, in the absence of your Spiritual Leadership."
Rod's response: "Oh, I get it now, you want me to do it 100% your way, which you say is Jehovah's way, and so any kind of compromise is out of the question." Wife's response: "Yes, you know that Jehovah's way is the only right way, and we must obey Jehovah, and teach our kids to do the same."
So now, LMS-Chef, tell me how YOU would "fix" this or "get rid of it"?

Do you think the world will end soon. If so, when?
by Rod P inpredictions for the end of the world have been going on since the time of christ, and in every century since then.
during the past 100 years there have been more predictions for the end of the world than have been made in all the previous centuries combined.
many of these prophesied dates have since come and gone.. people look around and see the possibility of many different natural or man-made disasters by which the end could come.

Golf,
I have read a number of books on this whole subject and I find it very fascinating. However, I am reluctant to come to any firm conclusions for a number of different reasons. One is that there are many competing theories and scenarios about the end of the world than the One World Government. Secondly, the whole mindset surrounding Conspiracy Theories, together with a lot of "fringe loonies and fanatics" that are out there and connected with this, makes me not only nervous, but also wary. Some of it may be about connecting a lot of pieces of information together in history and politics on some kind of logic, and then coming to conclusions about it. It is kind of like "talking oneself into something", or just pure rationalization. The JW's have done this in spades with their many predictions about the end of this system of things, but all of them turned out to be wrong.
One of the things that jumps out at me about the split pyramid and the "all seeing eye" on the dollar bill, coupled with 1776, is that we are now in 2005 (almost 230 years later). I doubt very much that any of the founding fathers of America were envisioning some One World Government 230 years or more into the future. I rather it was more of a case like the Apostles of the New Testament times, who were anticipating an imminent return of the Saviour (but which, from hindsight, did not occur as anticipated).
Therefore, I am not prepared to hang my hat on this whole thesis, that the end of the "world" is about to happen.

I was a JW, and married happily into the faith. Then I reached a point of not believing, and became converted to Mormonism (sadly). My apostasy from the JW faith resulted in disfellowshipment and a kind of marital "shunning". In other words, we could talk about common everyday things, but not anything spiritual. That was a No-No! Now, you tell me how on earth you're supposed to make a marriage work in a religiously divided home, where you are not allowed to talk about things openly, especially when it comes to values. For example, my wife taught the kids that those churches we drive by are "Bad" (i.e. their part of Satan's Babylon the Great, adn will all be destroyed in Armageddon). Mormons are taught never to condemn or hate other religions. This meant there was a difference in Values. I did not want the kids to be taught such hatred, while my wife believed that it was teaching them the truth from Jehovah. But then we couldn't discuss it! So nothing can be worked out, and there can be no compromising. This is but one small example.
When our oldest daughter was in Grade one, my loving partner in marriage went behind my back and instructed the teachers to exclude her from all of the school activities that had to do with Xmas, Halloween, flag salute, national anthem. When I found out about it, I instructed the school to opt her back in. This turned into a showdown when she wanted to take this to her lawyers to defend the JW side. And she told me that in the absence of my "Spiritual Leadership" she had to take my place and become the leader. The effect on the kids was devastating. Our oldest daughter would lay on the living room rug and just stare into space in a catatonic state.. She couldn't handle it. She loved us both, but was being forced to choose one parent over the other. I am not trying to rave on about our past fights, but rather to illustrate how religious division in the home can create situations that are impossible to resolve or deal with. How then, can you make a marriage work under those circumstances, when religion dictates all or nothing, and no compromise allowed? And what kind of scars would this leave on the kids growing up in that?

Testing this thread. Tried three times already, but only get Error message.
Wow, this time it worked. Here goes.
There are a lot of people who feel very strongly that you should keep a marriage together at all costs for the sake of the kids, since they feel that children need both a mother and a father. I have met a few of them.
There are also many who feel that you should not keep a really bad marital relationship together because of the kids. When two people no longer love each other, and the relationship has broken down, and everything possible has been tried to work it out, and nothing can be resolved, then, according to them, it is better to go your separate ways. That way the children do not have to be raised in an unhappy and depressing atmosphere for the rest of their childhood, listening to all the fighting and arguing, which only leaves the kids with a lot of mental and emotional scars that can last a lifetime.
What do you think?

Running Man,
Hmmm. That's interesting. I actually wondered about that. But we fooled around with so many different versions of chess, and it didn't affect our normal chess games. It was like playing different games, like say, playing Bridge and then playing chess.
Another game we played was when we took a board and partitioned it off in the middle with another board, so that neither side could see the other's side. Then we could set up our pieces ANY WAY WE WANTED along the horizontal rows. When we both said we were ready, the middle partition was taken away, and all would be revealed. At that point, we started the game. If you put your pawns in the back and your powerful pieces in front, they were immediately mobile and could inflict a lot of damage. On the other hand, they were often more vulnerable, especially since white moves first. That was a fun game. We could also put two layers of pawns around the king and almost make him invincible. But it also immobilized the back pawns trapped by the ones in front. It all depends how your opponent sets up his pieces, which would be the best setup for you. But, of course, you can't see what your opponent has done until it is revealed.

Outoftheorg,
Naaah! It's a good thing you put in that 1975 date so we knew where you were coming from. Otherwise, a bunch of us here were gonna trounce ya! Heh..heh.
Golf,
Of course you didn't put that on the dollar bill. But what exactly do those phrase mean in terms of a time frame? Were they looking to some far off future date for this One World Government, or was this something more to do about the time when it was first printed on the bill? I am very suspicous they were looking into the next millenium we now find ourselves living in.
Fairmind,
I do not mock God. The problem I have is one of Scriptural Interpretation being imposed on this particular generation. It has been going on for centuries, and all have been proven false. And in the past 100 years or so there have been so many false dates and predictions by so many different professing Christians and Organizations all using their Bibles, that it is no wonder so many of us become skeptical about such predictions. So when do we get to listen to the next false prophesy. We all know the story of the boy who cried "Wolf!" Why isn't God straightening out all this mass confusion? It sure isn't being made clear from the Bible, because of those preachers who use it to predict wrong dates or times. So please do not blame us for being skeptical, and neither do I believe for a moment that God is going to condemn us for not believing, for precisely the reason I just stated. "God is not the author of confusion, but of peace."
The Word,
You better have a good long, hard look at your Old Testament about Jehovah. Then come back and show me where He does not punish humans. Start with the Flood, and then look at the Prophets (like Samuel). How about where Jehovah uses the wicked kings and their armies to inflict punishment and judgement on Israel. Oh, and while you're at it, tell me about all those innocent babies that were destroyed. After that, you can tell me about Jehovah's love. It makes me sick to my stomache to read all this stuff, and then talk about His Love.

My bloodhound likes c'llecting big rocks!
She loves them much better than socks!
Her master just smiles,
As she puts them in piles,
She could tell us a lot if she talks! (The dog, that is.)
